The Smart Apnea Stimulator (SAS) is a very simple, battery operated, non-invasive mechanical vibratory stimulator, which promotes a response to “trick” the brain to breath, potentially solving difficult apnea and periodic breathing issues facing many pediatric patients. The scientific principal behind the operation of the device involves stimulating afferent proprioceptive nerves in the limbs of patients to trigger breathing by applying a mechanical vibration via an electrically activated transducer. NCC-PDI provided $50,000 in direct funding and regulatory and clinical consultation services.
